In 2014 Katie Roberts began an Artist Residency at Darebin Parklands, (rehabilitated bushland park) in Melbourne Australia. Through this online journal I will record the development of the work, redocumenting the Darebin Creek, its natural and urban surrounds and history. This project is part of a long-term endeavor to redocument the length of the Yarra River and its catchment area, the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people and modern day Melbourne.

The Artist

Katie Roberts was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1973. Her family moved to the UK when she was three, where she sent formative years before returning to Australia aged six. At the age of four Katie had a profound revelation that she wanted to be an artist. Since that time it has been the driving force in her life.

Between 1990 and 1996 Katie studied Fine Art part-time at NMIT tafe in Preston and Bundoora.
In 1996 she began a BA in Fine Art at RMIT, she began in the Painting department but after the tragic death of her partner she transfered to newly established Drawing department where she was supported and flourish. She completed the Degree with first class honours and accepted the invitation to undertake an Honours year in 2000.

In 2001 after completing her honours year Katie Roberts established Synergy Gallery a community, contemporary art space in High Street Northcote, helping spark off the artistic revival of the area.

Katie returned to RMIT and completed her Masters in Fine Art in 2006, her topic was 'Light as a Medium'. She then went on to begin the long-term endeavor to redocument the length of the Yarra River and its catchment area, traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people in which modern day city of Melbourne was built. Through this work she hopes to address the invisible history of this city.

Katie lives in her childhood home in Fairfield just a few blocks away from Darebin Parklands, with her son, partner and dog Sundi the golden retriever.

As a professional artist Katie Roberts has exhibited many times in solo and group shows, her work is held in private collections both in Australia and overseas.
